Choosing the right bike can make a big difference in comfort, confidence, and performance. For NICA racing and practices—where most riding takes place on cross-country (XC) singletrack—our recommendation is straightforward: get the lightest bike your budget allows.
A lightweight bike accelerates faster, climbs more easily, and reduces overall fatigue during longer rides. For the type of XC riding that we do, a hardtail mountain bike is ideal. Modern hardtails are efficient, durable, and perfectly suited for the type of terrain we ride. There’s no need for the extra weight or complexity of rear suspension unless you’re regularly riding more technical terrain with big drops, jumps, or rough downhill sections.
Full-suspension XC bikes do exist and many are impressively light—but they come at a premium. These bikes are best suited for experienced riders or those with the budget to invest in higher-end components and carbon frames. They can offer added comfort and traction, but they are not necessary for NICA training or racing.
Fork travel in the range of 100–120 mm is all you need. Anything beyond that typically adds unnecessary weight and slows you down on climbs and flats.
The below is a general list of recommendations with price points and weights. Note: These price ranges are for NEW bikes. You can find some great deals on the used marketplaces such as Facebook Marketplace and Pinkbike.
Remember, all NICA registered student athletes and coaches are eligible for discounts on bikes and equipment. See more here: https://nationalmtb.org/athlete-coach-benefits. Grumpy's Bike shop in Spindale is a Giant dealer and also a great resource for sourcing a new bike.
